St John Southworth

St John Southworth was born in 1592 in Lancashire and was an English Catholic martyr. He is one of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales. He studied at the English College in Douai, now in northern France, and was ordained priest before he returned to England in 1619. His Feast Day is the 27th June. In 1627, he was arrested – the first arrest of many. He pleaded guilty to exercising priesthood and was sentenced to be executed. He died on the 28th June 1654 in Tyburn, London. His body was buried in an unmarked grave for protection. The grave was discovered in 1927 in France and his remains were returned to England.
